This report includes only the first five generations of the Nova Scotia Planter descendants. To learn more about the early descendants of Edmund Rice visit the Edmund Rice (1638) Association,.
John Rice was born on 17 December 1738 at Worcester, MA, (literally 1738-9 per vital records, but 1739 per Ward, and shown as December 26th per Supplement.)1,3,4,5 He married Sarah Smith on 7 May 1761 at Sudbury, MA; (6th per Rice Gen'l Register.)6,4,3 John Rice married Mary Potter on 22 April 1785 at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS; (21st per Rice Gen'l Register.)4,3 John Rice died on 2 May 1811 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS.7,8,4
He resided circa 1760 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS.1 He immigrated to Nova Scotia on the ship Charming Molly with Beriah Rice and Ebenezer Rice Jr. He settled on the west side of the Lequille River. Your authors note that John Rice and Ebenezer Rice's names do not appear on the manifest of the Charming Molly, a manifest that has survived.4 He was listed in the township records as surveyor of land in April 1792 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS.9 He left a will on 4 April 1811 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS, which was recorded 24 May 1811 naming wife Mary and children Mary Potter the wife of Israel Potter, William, James, Silas, and Thomas.7
The Rice Genealogical Register, 1970, says "John went to Nova Scotia on ship 'Charming Molly' with Beriah Rice and Ebenezer Rice Jr. He settled on the west side of Lequille River." In his 1897 History of the County of Annapolis, W A Calnek provides the passenger manifest the first trip of the Charming Molly. A Beriah Rice, together with Beriah's sons Stephen and Benjamin, are on that manifest; John Rice's name is not. This does not mean that John did not arrive in 1760, only that he was not on the first, recorded trip of the Charming Molly.
In his addendum to Calnek's history, Judge Savary provides a list of petitioners for a Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis, dated October 30th, 1765. John Rice's name was not on that list.
Back to Calnek's history, John Rice's name appears on the census of 1768 for Annapolis. He has three males and three females in his household, all American. He was enumerated in the 1770 census with six people in his household, two American and four Acadian. We may assume that the four Acadians were his children born in Nova Scotia.
According to Marion B McCormick, 1975: 'He was the ancestor of the greater part of the Annapolis Valley Rice family. He was a friend of Col. Hoar and settled on part of his farm, and during the Colonel's absences from home, he looked after the affairs of his friend. After the Colonel's death, John bought part of the estate, and later passed it on to his son James, who had been born on the farm, and who dies there in 1886.'

2,1 Joseph F. Rice was the son of James Franklin Rice and Eliza Hardy.
The Rice Gen'l Register has an apparent error. On p. 366, Joseph M. Rice married Mary Melvina Messenger. On p. 379, Joseph F. Rice married Melvina Messenger. The estate probate record of Joseph M. Rice provides conclusive evidence that Frederick Augustus Rice is the son of Joseph M. Rice, a descendant of Beriah Rice. Joseph F. Rice is a descendant of John Rice.3

Joseph M Rice was born on 29 July 1834 at Bloody Creek, Annapolis Co, NS.1 He was the son of William Rice and Mary Ann Allen. Joseph M Rice married Mary Melvena Messenger, daughter of Deacon James Messenger, on 24 February 1863 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS.2,1 Joseph M Rice drowned in 1866 at Annapolis River, Bridgetown, Annapolis Co, NS; at age 32. There is much uncertainty about the death date of Joseph Rice. The court record cites 13 December 1866. Spurr cites a newspaper article in July 1866 giving the date as 11 June. Your author notes that there are other errors in the abstracts of the probate records as, for example, Jeptha Rice is cited as the brother of Joseph when we know him to the Joseph's uncle. Direct descendants should verify these two cited sources.3,4 The estate was probated on 22 December 1866 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS; granting a letter of administration to brother Jeptha Rice and his father William Rice of Annapolis. Joseph died 13 Dec 1866 leaving no widow and only one child. On 12 November 1880 a letter of guardianship was granted to Rev Aaron Cogswell of Lake George, Yarmouth County over the person and estate of Frederick A Rice, age 16 years, of Bridgetown, the son of Joseph W Rice.3
