This report includes only the first five generations of the Nova Scotia Planter descendants. To learn more about the early descendants of Edmund Rice visit the Edmund Rice (1638) Association,. Ebenezer Rice was born on 6 November 1743 at Westborough, MA.4,1,2,3 He was the son of Ebenezer Rice and Anna Rice. Ebenezer Rice married Tabitha Balcom, daughter of Joseph Balcom and Deborah Boice, before 1770. Your author has searched in vain for the marriage of Ebenezer Rice and Tabitha Balcom in Sudbury, MA and surrounding communities and at Annapolis, NS. The Rice Genealogical Register and McCormick 1975 list their marriage year as 1778 which your author considers very unlikely.
The 1770 census for Annapolis lists Ebenezer Jnr (III) Rice with three in his household, two American and one Acadian. We can assume that he and Tabitha Balcom had been married for at least one year and had one child.
Note that Ebenezer Jnr (III) was not listed in the 1768 census but was a signer of the 30 October 1765 petition for the Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis (see Savary, p 105). It is possible that he returned to Massachusetts for a time between 1765 and 1770 and might even have married Tabitha in Massachusetts, so your author doesn't list Nova Scotia as their place of marriage.5,3,2 Ebenezer Rice died in 1795.6
He resided after 1760 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS.7,8 He left a will on 2 September 1795 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS, listing his wife Tabitha and children Jonas, Levy(sic), Ann, and Sarah. This is our first indication that he had a daughter Sarah.6
