Edwin Hoyt Potter was born on 13 August 1891.1 He was the son of Edwin Wilmot Potter and Ella M Phinney.1 Edwin Hoyt Potter died in August 1901. His obituary is reported to have said: One of the saddest affairs we have chronicled this season is that of the death by drowning on Tuesday last, of Edwin (usually known as "Baby"), the bright and clever little eleven-year-old of Mrs. Ellen Potter. In company with several companions, he had gone in bathing near the old Queen's wharf, and getting beyond his depth in the water, and in reach of the current, was carried out beyond the help of his companions, who heroically tried to save their comrade. The group he was with were all about of the same age, and naturally did not know what to do. The alarm was not given until they had dressed themselves. Had they as much as thought of calling for help there is no doubt but what the lad might have been saved. The body was not recovered until next morning, when it was discovered by Messrs. Sanford Bishop and Griffin O'Dell in the rear of the Clifton House. The body was taken to the Engine Hall where an inquest was held, and the verdict found of accidental death by drowning. Right here, we may say that we do not know whether the law calls for these inquests, but if so, we should say that in a case of this kind it seems absolutely unnecessary. The funeral took place yesterday, and was largely attended. The sympathy of the community goes out to the mother in her hour of affliction, and doubly so from the fact that her husband was found drowned near the spot where the son met the same fate.2
