     She and Lexy L Hutchinson resided after 1868 at Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON, on the south 1/2 of lot 25, concession 2, but later moved to Vienna. He delivered the mail at one time.1 Eliza Jane McCurdy is likely the Eliza Jane McCready who was received into church membership on 2 August 1870 at Port Burwell Baptist Church, Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1 She and Lexy L Hutchinson appeared on the census of 1881 at Bayham, Elgin East, ON; Lexy Hutchinson, married, male, age 40, born Ontario, Occ: Farmer; Eliza Hutchinson, married, female, age 32, born Ontario; Ambrose Hutchinson, male, age 6, born Ontario; Florence Hutchinson, female, age 15, born Ontario.2 After 13 November 1912 Eliza Jane McCurdy left 2/3 of her estate to her niece Alma Edy of London, Ontario, the remainder to Richard Henry McCurdy, her nephew.1

     Richard McCurdy was born on 21 May 1806 at Surry, NH, age 80 in the 1881 census.1,2 He married Sarah Harris, daughter of Francis Harris Jr and Rachael McDormand, on 19 December 1832 at Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1 Richard McCurdy died on 14 July 1888 at Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1 He was buried after 14 July 1888 at Estherville Cemetery, Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1
     He had a large landholding in the vicinity of lots 20 to 25, 2nd concession, in the center of what has been called the Otter Valley Settlement or McCurdy Corners. He operated a sawmill using a water-powered vertical saw, but later converted to steam.
From the records of the Bayham Town Book which covers the years 1839 to 1848 he took an active part in the Bayham Township administration. On 7 January he was named one of 27 roadmasters, the following year an overseer of highways and roads, and in 1841 one of the pathmasters. On 3 January 1842 he was named one of 7 common school commissioners, and an overseer of highways and roads. In 1843 he was again named common school commissioner, and one of 3 fence viewers. In 1844 her served as common school commissioner again, and as roadmaster and pathmaster, the latter for 1845 as well as fence viewer. On 6 January 1846 he was named town warden which he held the following year along with pathmaster and poundkeeper.
In 1854 he was a trustee of the newly formed Presbyterian church in Port Burwell, but it is thought the family attended the Otter Valley Baptist Church which was erected in 1845. He received on 23 December 1871 from the estate of his deceased sister Nancy of Chesterfield, NH $191.91.1 He appeared on the census of 1881 at Bayham, Elgin East, ON; with son Frank (Francis).2

     Samuel Densmore McCurdy was born circa 10 May 1836, presumably at Bayham Township, Ontario.1 He was the son of Richard McCurdy and Sarah Harris.1 Samuel Densmore McCurdy married Elsie Ann Stilwell, daughter of William Stilwell and Christiana Ostrander, on 5 January 1868 at Ontario.1 Samuel Densmore McCurdy died on 5 May 1905.1 He was buried after 5 May 1905 at Otter Valley Cemetery, Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1

William Watts McCurdy1

     William Watts McCurdy was born in April 1838 at Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1 He was the son of Richard McCurdy and Sarah Harris.1 William Watts McCurdy married 1st Amelia Giesendorf in 1865; by whom he is said to have had a son and daughter.1 William Watts McCurdy married 2nd Clara Howells at Indiana.1
     William Watts McCurdy removed to Indianapolis, IN where he is said to have been an active figure in business, politics, and literature, contributing poetry and prose to a number of literary publications under the pseudonym "W Harold". He was appointed by President Harrison as deputy collector of customs at Port Townsend, WA. After Harrison's administration, William went to Fresno, CA where he was a collector for the San Joaquin Electric Company. He died intestate, survived by his widow. His estate was estimated at not more than $100.1

     She was a clerk of the District Court at Minot, ND.1 There is an error in the birth date of either Joseph Clinton or Bertha Margaret. Cormack McDermand married 1st Elmira Denton, daughter of Loce Denton, before 1841.2 Cormack McDermand married 2nd Eliza Israel, daughter of Balsor Israel, on 19 October 1876 at Freeport, Digby Co, NS.5 Cormack McDermand died on 11 October 1898; at age 82.1 He was buried at Hilltop Cemetery, Westport, Digby Co, NS.1

McDermand married Minnie Rusling, daughter of William Rusling and Charity Culver.1 Edmund D. McDermand died on 22 January 1919 at Ingersoll, Oxford Co, ON; at the home of his son, Arthur.1

James W. McDermand1

     James W. McDermand was born on 8 January 1831, supposedly at Malahide Township, Ontario.1 He was the son of Sydney Smith McDermand and Sarah Morehouse.1 James W. McDermand married Martha Tufford, daughter of Rev George Tufford and Martha (?), after 1861.1,2 James W. McDermand died on 27 December 1899.1
     He was also known as James McDormand.2 He was a carpenter by trade, and while residing at Vienna, Ontario was responsible for the erection of the school in 1862, the Anglican church, and a number of stores and dwellings such as the brick home of Mrs Peter McClelland on the 1st Concession of Bayham. Later in life they returned to Lakeview, Ontario.1 He appeared on the census of 1881 at Malahide, Elgin East, ON; James McDermond, married, male, age 50, born Ontario, Occ: Farmer; Martha McDermond, married, female, age 45, born Ontario; Charles McDermond, male, age 14, born Ontario; Sidney McDermond, male, age 12, born Ontario.3 Is he the William who was enumerated in the 1861 census, b abt 1835?1

Joseph Clinton McDermand1

     Joseph Clinton McDermand was born on 11 May 1874 at Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1 He was the son of Joseph McDermand and Isabella McDermand.1 Joseph Clinton McDermand married Florence May Seburn, daughter of Thomas Seburn and Emma (?), on 27 November 1895 at Yarmouth, Elgin Co, ON.1,2 Joseph Clinton McDermand died on 26 January 1955.1
     He was an engineer on the Great Northern Railroad, later president of the Labor National Bank of Great Falls (Montana?), and chairman of the Brotherhood of Railway Engineers.1 There is an error in the birth date of either Joseph Clinton or Bertha Margaret. Note that Bertha was enumerated in 1881 as 9 years old and Clifton (sic) was enumerated as 6 years old in the 1881 census. He immigrated in 1897 to USA.3 He and Florence May Seburn appeared on the census of 1930 at Montville Twp, Medina Co, OH.3 Joseph Clinton McDermand and Florence May Seburn appeared on the census of 1940 at Montville Twp, Medina Co, OH.4

McDermand married Anna Rusling, daughter of William Rusling and Charity Culver, circa 1 October 1856 at Ontario.1 Lemuel D. McDermand died in 1899; while building a boat.1
     He was a ship's carpenter in 1898.1

Northrup, son of Jacob Northrup and Abigail Saxton, before 1857; John of Laveview, Ontario.3 Margaret Jane McDermand married John Henry Cronk after 1858.3 Margaret Jane McDermand died on 29 March 1909; at age 77.3
     There is a disagreement about the husbands and children of Margaret. Ross McCurdy has Margaret married 1st to John B Northrup and 2nd to John Henry Cronk. Marion McCormick has Margaret married to a Samuel Teed. We know that Margaret McDermand lived and married in Ontario. Sydney Smith McDermand1

     Sydney Smith McDermand was born on 17 August 1868 at Vienna, Elgin Co, ON.1,2 He was the son of James W. McDermand and Martha Tufford. Sydney Smith McDermand married Frances Cameron, daughter of Samuel Newell Cameron and Hannah Marie Haines, on 28 February 1893 at Carlton Baptist Church; by Rev Mason.1 Sydney Smith McDermand died on 5 August 1961.1 He was buried at Aylmer Cemetery, Aylmer, Elgin Co, ON.1
     He was a farmer where he was active in township affairs, serving as council member, for four years beginning in 1908 and again in 1931. He was elected to the Canadian parliament in 1921 as a representative of the United Farmers of Ontario, defeating the Conservative candidate, John L Stansell. After his parliamentary term in Ottawa he entered the insurance business, representing South Dorchester Farm Mutual for which he served as president for 18 years at Lakeview, ON.3

Sydney Smith McDermand married Sarah Morehouse at Centreville, Digby Co, NS, There is a disagreement about who Sarah was. Brian McDormand has her as Sarah Titus who first married a Morehouse. I have followed Ross McCurdy's lineage for Sarah.1 Sydney Smith McDermand died on 15 January 1879 at Port Burwell, Elgin Co, ON; at age 77 years, 8 months, 8 days.2,1 He was buried after 15 January 1879 at Estherville Cemetery, Bayham Twp, Elgin Co, ON.1
     He and Sarah Morehouse resided circa 1828 at Port Burwell, Elgin Co, ON, on the north 1/2 of lot 34, Concession 1.1 Sydney Smith McDermand and Sarah Morehouse joined the Baptist Church where he served as clerk and deacon in 1836 at Port Burwell, Elgin Co, ON.1
