Capt David Rice Lent1
This report includes only the first five generations of the Nova Scotia Planter descendants. To learn more about the early descendants of Edmund Rice visit the Edmund Rice (1638) Association,. Capt David Rice Lent was born on 23 September 1829 at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS.2,3 He was the son of John Lent and Mary Rice. Capt David Rice Lent married Minetta Rice, daughter of Captain George Rice and Harriett Clarke, on 6 August 1856 at Hillsburgh, Digby Co, NS; the Rice Gen'l Register gives the date as 20 August 1857, which appears to be in error.4,5,1 Capt David Rice Lent died on 15 March 1909 at Deep Brook, Annapolis Co, NS.2 He was buried after 15 March 1909 at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bear River, Annapolis Co, NS.2
He was a master mariner, and at the time of his marriage was captain of the schooner Alma.2,6 On 6 April 1857 David Rice Lent and his wife Manetta Rice Lent gave a quit claim deed of lands from John Lent to Abraham and Mary Rice Lent.7 On 7 April 1860 David Rice Lent and his wife Minetta Rice sold a 1 acre lot from the Middlesex land to Nathan Beeler for 10 pounds.8 On 13 March 1862 at Deep Brook, NS David Rice Lent and his wife Minetta Rice Lent purchased a 56 acre lot with frontage on the Annapolis Basin, and probably moved to Deep Brook about that time. In later transactions concerning mortgages with this lot, David Lent is referred to as of Deep Brook, a farmer.8 He and Minetta Rice appeared on the census of 1881 at Clementsport District, Annapolis Co, NS; David Lent, male, married, age 51, born Nova Scotia, Occ: Farming; Minetta Lent, female, married, age 54, born Nova Scotia; Harriet Lent, female, age 22, born Nova Scotia; Mary Lent, female, age 19, born Nova Scotia; Lilla B Lent, female, age 17, born Nova Scotia; Bertha Lent, female, age 12, born Nova Scotia.9 Capt David Rice Lent and Minetta Rice resided between 1891 and 1901 at Clements West District, Annapolis Co, NS.10,6 Spurr records all of the children of David Rice Lent and Minetta Rice Lent as born at Bear River. It appears from Spurrs source citations that the birth information was taken from the children's obituaries. Your author considers it much more likely that the children were all born at Deep Brook as the parents owned land there and were enumerated at Clements West, not Bear River in the 1891 and 1901 census. Your author notes that Deep Brook and the Clements West census district are only a few kilometers from Bear River.

This report includes only the first five generations of the Nova Scotia Planter descendants. To learn more about the early descendants of Edmund Rice visit the Edmund Rice (1638) Association,. John Lent was born on 3 October 1798 at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS.4 He was the son of Abraham Lent and Eleanor Spurr.2,3 John Lent and Mary Rice married 1st, daughter of Thomas Rice and Martha Potter, circa 1824 at Nova Scotia.1 John Lent died in 1841 at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS.4
John Lent was a farmer and blacksmith who lived his entire life in the township of Clements.4 On 31 December 1820 Robert and Sarah Jefferson sold to John Lent lot no. 5 on the south side of the Hessian Line Road, slightly east of Bear River. This lot of 100 acres was purchased for 70 pounds.5 He applied in 1828 for a land grant fronting on the Digby-Clements line. He received a grant of 200 acres and at his death specified that it be equally divided among his seven sons.4 On 13 August 1828 he purchased lot no. 6 adjoining his lot no. 5 on the south side of the Hessian Line Road. This lot of 100 acres was purchased from Henry and Abigail Vroom of Wilmot for 120 pounds, and was financed by a mortgage on both lots 5 and 6 to Rev. Edwin Gilpin of Annapolis.4 On 13 October 1840 John and Mary Lent sold 50 acres of land to Jacob Long for 100 pounds. This land fronting north on the Negro Line Road was either part of lot 5 or 6, as those lots combined were only 150 acres at the time of John's death, reduced by 50 acres from the original acreage.6 On 13 June 1841 John and Mary Lent sold one acre of land to Eliza Ann Chute, widow of Horatio Chute. The sale was for 100 pounds and probably contained a house as a barn was used as a corner for measurements.6 On 23 September 1841 at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS, John Lent left a will. Which was recorded 25 November 1841. Mentioned in the will were: wife Mary; children: Abram, Israel, John Henry, David Rice, William Franklin, Isaac, Jacob, Elinor Jane, and Martha Lucinia; brother Abram Lent; brother in law David Rice of Hillsburgh. In his Will, John speaks of being "debilitated in health of body but of perfect mind and memory." His will shows his great concern for the comfort of his wife and the education of his children, and for the settlement of his debts as soon as possible.7
