Royal Harvey Hazelton

To learn more about the early descendants of Edmund Rice visit the Edmund Rice (1638) Association,.
Royal Harvey Hazelton was born on 1 March 1786 at Vermont, probably at Windham or Rutland County.1 He was the son of Royal Hazelton and Peggy (?). Royal Harvey Hazelton married Mehitabel Arms, daughter of Thomas Arms and Polly Coolidge, circa 1808; his grandson once gave information that Royal and Mehitable were married on 2 December 1803 at Smithfield, Madison County, NY. Since Royal would have been only 17 years of age, and since their first child was not born until 1808, it seems likely that the year of marriage might have been later than 1803. Your authors have searched in vain for a marriage record.1 Royal Harvey Hazelton died circa 1851 at Greene County, MO. Although we have no record of his death, Royal's will was prepared in April 1850 and probated 1 July 1851.1
He resided in 1800 at Tinmouth, VT, with his parents.1 He resided in 1820 at Middlesex, Ontario Co, NY, with 3 males and 5 females, ages 0 to 15 years.2 He resided in 1825 at Union County, IN, with 5 sons and 4 daughters.1 He resided in 1830 at Tippecanoe County, IN.3 He resided in 1840 at Greene County, MO.3 He resided in 1850 at Polk Township, Greene Co, MO. 1850 census for Polk Twp says owns real estate $2,000 and residing with Pricilla Ragsdale.3 He left a will on 8 April 1850 at Greene County, MO. "I will and bequeath to my wife all my property both personal and real for her support during her life time that she may have a plenty in her old age and when she shall depart and kned (sic) no more, I order that all my property both personal and real be sold: one thousand dollars paid to each of my six daughters, the remainder equally divided among my ten children. I order that the court appoint some suitable person to execute this will. I hereby revoke all former wills and codicils by me made." /s/ Royal Hazelton.1

Royal Harvey Hazelton III was born on 5 November 1819 at Tippecanoe County, IN.1 He was the son of Royal Harvey Hazelton and Mehitabel Arms. Royal Harvey Hazelton III married 1st Martha Ann Reynolds on 21 December 1839 at Greene County, MO; by William G Summers, JP.1 Royal Harvey Hazelton III and Martha Ann Reynolds were divorced before 1871.1 Royal Harvey Hazelton III married 2nd Martha Ann Boren on 13 December 1871.1 Royal Harvey Hazelton III died on 8 September 1886 at Lane County, OR.1
In 1849 Royal Harvey Hazelton III joined the rush for gold, traveling to California with his two brothers-in law. Although he had no success with mining, the trip did introduce him to the opportunities of the west coast. As a young man he had learned the trade of wagon repairman, so after having seven children in Missouri, his family joined a wagon train to the Oregon country. On this long, difficult trip, they lost their youngest son, Samuel, on the banks of the Snake River in Idaho. Upon his arrival in Lane County, Oregon (where another five children were born), Royal secured a Donation Land Claim on land that is now downtown Eugene, Oregon. The Lane County Historical Society newsletter of September 1976 says: "... according to a recently found article on our earliest history, the city of Eugene might well have been names Royal or Hazelton. Royal Hazelton is credited with having taken up the exact claim on the West side of the Butte before Eugene Skinner arrived. Plans to build a log house were interrupted when Mr Hazelton became disenchanted and moved on south." Whether Martha Ann became disenchanted with the geographical area or with her mate, we do not know, but the marriage ended in divorce, and Martha Ann and their youngest son, George, age 4, returned to Greene County, Missouri.1 He and Martha Ann Boren appeared on the census of 1880 at Cottage Grove, Lane Co, OR; Royal H. Hazelton, self, male, married, age 60, born IN, Occ: Farmer, father born NY, mother born MA; Martha A. Hazelton, wife, female, married, age 41, born IA, Occ: Keeping House, father born ---, mother born ---; Royal Hazelton, son, male, age 7, born OR, father born IN, mother born IA; Hale Boren, step-son, male, age 14, born OR, Occ: At School, father born IN, mother born IA; Emma Boren, step-daughter, female, age 12, born OR, Occ: At School, father born IN, mother born IA; Harrison Hazelton, other, male, age 29, born MO, Occ: Wagon Maker, father born IN, mother born IA; Charles Webber, other, male, divorced, age 51, born Germany,Occ: Physician, father born Germany, mother born Germany.2

Sophronia Hazelton was born on 12 April 1812 at Madison County, NY. There is some uncertainty about where Sophorina was born. A biographical sketch "Indiana - Cass, Miami, Howard, and Tipton Counties" states that Sophorina was born in Union County, Indiana, daughter of Royal and Mehitable Hazelton. However, your authors question this location as all census records to which she was the apparent respondent show her state of birth as New York. It appears that Sophorina lived in New York until about age seven, when her family moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, then to Union County, Indiana.1 She was the daughter of Royal Harvey Hazelton and Mehitabel Arms. Sophronia Hazelton married Samuel Harvey, son of Henderson Harvey and Martha McConnell, on 8 February 1827 at Union County, IN.1 Sophronia Hazelton died on 15 June 1885 at Preble County, OH; at her son's home near Concord Church of hanging - suicide.1
She appeared on the census of 1880 at Dixon, Preble Co, OH; aged 67y, under the name Harvey, living with her son Royal.2
