Everett William Brown Sr was born and spent his early years in the City of Worcester. He attended North High School. He was a member of the First Universalist Church. Upon leaving school he went to work for the Sherman Envelope Company, which at the time was located on Prescott Street in Worcester, as an envelope cutter. He enlisted in the Massachusetts National Guard in May, 1917 in response to a call for volunteers when the United States entered World War I. The Massachusetts National Guard was designated the 26th, or 'Yankee', Division of the United States Army. He was assigned to Battery E of the 102nd Field Artillery which was made up of men primarily from the Worcester area. After a period of training at Boxford, Massachusetts, the YD was sent to France. In France the 102nd underwent further training as artillerymen. Battery E went into the front lines in early February 1918 at Mont des Tombes, just north of Soissons. From that date until the Armistice on November 11, 1918 the YD saw action at various points on the front and were under fire, including gas attack, for a considerable portion of that time. Everett was promoted to corporal and also received a citation for gallantry under fire. After the cessation of hostilities on November 11 it was about five months before the YD arrived in Boston. Everett kept a daily diary of his time in France and this diary has been transcribed to book form by his son Robert and daughter-in-law, Ainslee. Everett returned to the Sherman Envelope Company where he was employed until the company moved to Albany, New York (1939?). At that time he went work for the New England Envelope Company, located on Eden Street in Worcester. The New England Envelope Company later moved to the corner of Park Avenue and Chandler Street. Everett remained with New England Envelope until his death. Everett was the victim of chronic asthma, which came upon him in 1942(?) at the age of 46. This was the only major medical problem in his life. Asthma was the underlying cause of his death. Everett was active in community affairs and for many years was a call member of the Shrewsbury Fire Department. He held the title of Captain. He and Lillian were for many years active members of the Worcester Pistol and Rifle Club and were excellent marksmen. Everett was secretary of the club for a number of years. Other organizations: American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars.1 Everett William Brown was born on 28 December 1896 at Worcester, MA.1 He was christened at Worcester, MA.1 He married Lillian Alma Dupre on 5 September 1921.1 Everett William Brown died on 26 February 1957 at Saint Petersburg, FL; on vacation.1 He was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury, MA.1
